After winning the Miss Malaysia Tourism 2012/13 beauty pageant and the Dreamgirl of the Year International 2012/13 award, Jun Yong became an even more familiar face on 8TV Quickie as well as Football Extra on Astro SuperSport.
Hailing from George Town, Penang, the 22-year-old lass is far from being yet another beauty queen, however. Citing reading, singing and hanging out with friends over coffee as her favourite pastime, Jun aspires to be a journalist and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from Limkokwing University. Here, the beguiling beauty sits down with Chivalrystyle to talk about her achievements, chivalry and the perfect gentleman.
How did the decision to join a beauty pageant come about?
I get bored fairly easily and so I was always in need to try out new things and achieve new heights in my life. I like to challenge myself as well – which was why I joined the Miss Malaysia Tourism beauty pageant. Thankfully, that turned out well and proved fruitful too (laughs).
What are your biggest achievements so far?
My biggest achievements would be winning the Miss Malaysia Tourism beauty pageant and the 8TV Quickie Search, which gave me the opportunity to host the 8TV Quickie show. Suffice to say, it has been a fun journey and a lot of things have happened in the past few years which I am very grateful for.
You are an aspiring journalist, you participate in volunteer work, spend time with children at homeless shelters and work part time as a kindergarten teacher while balancing your studies and your job as a TV host. How do you manage to juggle all that?
I think it all boils down to effective time management, careful planning and of course, the support that you get from your family and friends.
What are the constant challenges that you face, and how do you overcome them?
My mother constantly reminds me that when you work and study so hard it’s normal that sometimes you will lack the drive and feel demotivated. You need to constantly tell yourself to just do it – all this will eventually pay off. It is also important to know what you want in life and to not lose sight of that aim, otherwise you will only be going through the motions.
– Make-up or natural?
In my line of work as a beauty queen and a TV host there is a certain image to project so I am almost always done up, but in the presence of my family and close friends, I try to go make-up-free.
– Introvert or extrovert?
I am an extrovert when it comes to working, studying and being around my friends, but I can be introverted as well. I talk for a living, so sometimes I just like to listen to people talking instead.
– Book or movie version?
The book versions are almost always better. If I have yet to read the book but have already seen the movie version which was done very well, I would say the movie.
– Shower song?
I rarely sing in the shower. I think my parents are quite annoyed at hearing me all the time so I try to keep quiet whenever I can (laughs).
– Guilty pleasures?
Chocolates and coffee, definitely. Now I’m also moving on to cakes, especially pavlovas.
– Pet peeves?
People who drive too slow on the fast lane. CS
